Why do we celebrate Advent?

Advent comes from the word adventus, meaning “coming,” in Latin. It’s a time of preparation for the coming of Christ’s Light into our world. During the month of December we are called to make ready our hearts and our minds for that moment when light chases away the darkness. At the turn of the century Advent calendars became popular among Protestant families as a way of counting down the days in the march toward Christmas. Below you will find a modern version of this tradition, and we encourage you to come here each day to read the scripture verse, do the activity, or take time to contemplate waiting for the birth of Christ. The days are mixed up to add the additional fun of hunting for each door and turning them over one by one. Happy Advent!
